Dr. Daniel Drucker recognized with diabetes research award
Dr. Daniel Drucker, Senior Investigator at the Lunenfeld-Tanenbaum Research Institute, has been awarded the prestigious 2019 Harold Hamm International Prize for Biomedical Research in Diabetes. Selected by an international jury of diabetes experts, this is the largest prize of it’s kind in the world. “This honour bestowed upon my research group is further affirmation of the scientific excellence in metabolism research at the Lunenfeld-Tanenbaum Research Institute and the University of Toronto,” Drucker said. With a looming aging crisis, who is helping the caregivers?
Elder care leaves families stressed, exhausted and looking for help. For caregivers helping relatives and friends who live with dementia, the Sinai Health System’s Reitman Centre in Toronto and Alzheimer Societies across Ontario now provide in-person and online programs that offer psychological support and skills training on managing dementia-related behaviours. Workplaces launch help for employees struggling with caring for elder relatives
About six million Canadians are balancing their careers with caregiving duties and experts say the realities of an aging population mean it’s time to face the situation head on. “Employers are still largely unaware of this as a significant issue and liability. If we don’t start tackling it soon, we could have a significant economic productivity issue on our hands,” said Dr. Samir Sinha, director of geriatrics at Toronto’s Sinai Health System and the University Health Network.
