Sinai Health Bioethics Grand Rounds: Entering the Grey Zone – Supporting decision making in the NICU

June 8, 2023 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

Presenter:
Dr. Alessia Gallipoli MD, MHSc (Bioethics), FRCPC (Pediatrics)
Fellow in Neonatal-Perinatal Ethics

This presentation will discuss complexities in decision making for complex and premature infants, both before and after delivery. The concepts of the ‘grey-zone’ of decision making and ‘parental discretion’ will be explored as they relate to frequently encountered scenarios in the NICU, along with how the bioethical considerations that arise from these often complicated scenarios can be understood and balanced. Approaches to these cases will be discussed to support both families and providers.

Objectives:
1. Recognize common complexities encountered in decision-making before and after birth for complex and premature infants.
2. Understand the concepts of the grey-zone of decision making and the zone of parental discretion as they relate to decisions in the NICU.
3. Recognize the bioethical considerations that influence NICU care scenarios.
4. Develop an approach to supporting and working through complex decisions in the NICU.
