Systemic Bias and Racism Speaker Series: Antisemitism in health care (Part 2)

June 5, 2023 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

Join us in this two-part series led by Dr. Ayelet Kuper, with Dr. Joanna Krongold and Dr. Ariel Lefkowitz, as they engage participants in a conversation about antisemitism in health care. We will discuss how the concepts of equity and anti-oppression apply to the social context of Jewish patients and colleagues. We will learn about the historical and current marginalization of Jews in medical and educational institutions.

Given Sinai Health’s Legacy of caring for those who were vulnerable and marginalized and our Jewish heritage, the topic of antisemitism in health care is the foundation of our culture and the care and service we provide.

Dr. Ayelet Kuper is an Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine and a member of the Division of General Internal Medicine at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre. A child and grandchild of Holocaust survivors, she has a doctorate in Holocaust literature and is cross-appointed to the Anne Tanenbaum Centre for Jewish Studies.

Dr. Joanna Krongold is a Joint Postdoctoral Fellow at the Anne Tanenbaum Centre for Jewish Studies and the Temerty Faculty of Medicine’s Office of Inclusion and Diversity. In this role, she investigates antisemitism in health profession education.

Dr. Ariel Lefkowitz is an internal medicine physician and the Education Lead for the Division of General Internal Medicine at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre. He is an assistant professor at the University of Toronto and is the lead for novel educational sessions at the Faculty of Medicine on Religious Discrimination in Health Care and on Lessons for Physicians from the Holocaust.
