Recognizing excellence in Education

Sinai Health System honoured excellence in education across Bridgepoint and Mount Sinai on June 6, at this year’s Education Celebration. Dr. Jacqueline James, Sinai Health’s Vice President of Education, welcomed guests “It gives us great pleasure to be able to present to you the student educators, teachers and teams in our organization, she said. They are teaching the next generation of health care providers in an exemplary way, which means our learners are learning from the best.” The event featured a keynote by Dr. Ayelet Kuper, Scientist & Associate Director of Faculty Affairs at The Wilson Centre for Research in Education and Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of Toronto. Dr. Kuper’s presentation, titled Educating for Compassionate, Person-Centred Care, made the case that in addition to instructing on clinical skills, education for clinicians across all disciplines needs to teach about compassion and treating all patients as loved and loving humans deserving of dignity and justice. She advocated for a learning model that moves beyond the one-way transmission of technical knowledge and develops into a dialogue between supervisors and learners in which both sides exchange understanding and gain empathy. The event concluded with the presentation of the Awards of Excellence in Education, with 18 educators from clinical and non-clinical areas receiving awards in three categories: Distinguished Educator, Leadership in Education and Life Long Learner. In addition, two teams were recognized with the Collaboration in Education award.
