This week, our experts talk about how studying literature and art can assist physicians in their understanding of patients in The Walrus, share important info about metastatic breast cancer in DIVINE Magazine, a bilingual online destination for Canadian women, look at how the rising cost of insulin is affecting patients with diabetes in the New England Journal of Medicine, and consider nurse practitioners as vital players in ensuring safe opioid prescribing in the Journal for Nurse Practitioners.

Dr. Christine Brezden-MasleyDr. Christine Brezden-Masley, medical oncologist and medical director of cancer services at Sinai Health, sat down with Divine.ca to chat about metastatic breast cancer, advances in treatment and the psychological impact of diagnosis.

Dr. Allan Peterkin, psychiatrist at Mount Sinai Hospital, is a leader of the narrative medicine movement in Canada. Narrative medicine encourages physicians to “talk about bearing witness to suffering, that their [patients’] suffering has been acknowledged.” In other words, it encourages them to listen. Read more about this movement and practice in the latest issue of The Walrus.

Dr. Michael FralickDr. Michael Fralick, staff physician, general internal medicine at Mount Sinai Hospital, contributed a stark look at how insulin prices have risen sharply in the US, leaving patients with diabetes at great risk. Read the full piece in the New England Journal of Medicine.  You can also check out an audio interview with Michael about proposed solutions to the high price of insulin.

Just in time for Nurse Practitioner Week, Dr. Michelle Naimer, clinical director for the  Mount Sinai Academic Family Health Team, has published an interesting study about how a nurse practitioner led model can play an important role in overseeing safe opioid prescribing. This paper was submitted to the Journal for Nurse Practitioners with a great inter-professional team including nurse practitioner Jessica Munro, Suzanne Singh, pharmacist and Joanne Permaul, all from the academic family medicine team.
