Dr. Allan Peterkin, psychiatrist at Mount Sinai Hospital, is a leader of the narrative medicine movement in Canada. Narrative medicine encourages physicians to “talk about bearing witness to suffering, that their [patients’] suffering has been acknowledged.” In other words, it encourages them to listen. Just in time for Nurse Practitioner Week, Dr. Michelle Naimer, clinical director for the Mount Sinai Academic Family Health Team, has published an interesting study about how a nurse practitioner led model can play an important role in overseeing safe opioid prescribing. This paper was submitted to the Journal for Nurse Practitioners with a great inter-professional team including nurse practitioner Jessica Munro, Suzanne Singh, pharmacist and Joanne Permaul, all from the academic family medicine team.
