Did you know that hospitals in Canada contribute an estimated 8% of all greenhouse gases emitted into the environment and 11% of total public energy use? For reasons of patient safety, there are many ways that hospitals will remain less than green, such as many single-use medical devices, though there are many opportunities for improvement and innovation. “Lowering our waste and energy use and moving towards environmentally friendly-options while maintaining patient care and safety is always a big priority for us,” says Tracey Clatworthy, Environmental Sustainability at Sinai Health.

It looks like we are doing something right.  Sinai Health has achieved recognition for our environmental efforts by the Canadian Coalition for Green Health Care, who compile the Green Hospital Scorecard. We were recently recognized with a top score in the Waste category for Bridgepoint, and the Mount Sinai campus received an honorable mention within the peer group of academic hospitals, for water conservation.  Both sites have achieved a silver rating across the board.

The Green Hospital Scorecard is the only comprehensive health care benchmarking tool in Canada, measuring energy conservation, water conservation, waste management and recycling, corporate commitment and pollution prevention. Participating hospitals report on their environmental and sustainability initiatives through a questionnaire and receive a Green Hospital Scorecard summarizing their environmental performance relative to their peers.

“Initiatives like this show us where we are at, and gives us useful information to understand areas where we can improve on,” adds Tracey.  “The results of the Scorecard really help us set realistic targets and goals for continuous improvement.”

Upcoming Green Committee initiatives include a new trial run of hairnet recycling in some of our Mount Sinai departments, and across both campuses, we continue to investigate more ways to reduce, reuse and recycle across Bridgepoint and Mount Sinai.
