Professor Brian Golden, PhD, is the Sandra Rotman Chaired Professor in Health Sector Strategy at the Rotman School of Management, University of Toronto, where he is also Academic Director of the Global Executive MBA in Healthcare and the Life Sciences. He previously served as Vice-Dean, Professional Programs and Vice-Dean, MBA Programs.

Professor Golden’s policy contributions include membership on the advisory committee that led to Ontario’s Excellent Care for All legislation, co-authorship of the province’s 2013 report on Primary Care Governance, and co-authorship of “Patient Care Groups: A new model of population-based primary health care for Ontario” (the “Price Report”) for the Ontario Ministry of Health in 2015.

From 2005 to 2010, Professor Golden served as Board Chair of the Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences (ICES). From 2011 to 2016, he was Board Chair of Rise Asset Development, an organization that provides financial support and business guidance to entrepreneurs living with mental health challenges.

His research, teaching and consulting focus on change management, leadership, incentives and payment models, system design, and governance. His published work appears in the Harvard Business Review, the Canadian Medical Association Journal, the Strategic Management Journal, Healthcare Quarterly, HealthcarePapers, Annals of Pharmacotherapy, Management Science, Clinical Oncology, and Health Policy. His article “Transfiguring Healthcare Organizations,” published in Healthcare Quarterly, has been that journal’s most downloaded article, with more than 200,000 downloads.

As an advisor and leadership development educator, Professor Golden has worked with the Ontario Ministry of Health, medical associations across Canada, the United Kingdom’s National Health Service, the Cleveland Clinic, health regions across Canada, and hospitals including The Hospital for Sick Children, University Health Network, Hamilton Health Sciences, London Health Sciences Centre, Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH), BC Cancer, the King Faisal Specialist Hospital, and Baylor University Medical Center. Private sector clients include Tieto (Finland), General Electric, Janssen-Ortho, Philips and Baxter.

Professor Golden is the recipient of Canada’s Ted Freedman Award for Innovation in Healthcare Education and the Canadian Medical Association’s inaugural Eureka Award for Innovation in Physician Education. In 2016, he was named a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences.
