Labour and delivery rooms

Insurance for private and semi-private rooms
Most extended health insurance plans cover all or part of private or semi-private room charges.
Please check with your insurance provider for details. It is your responsibility to confirm your insurance coverage. Our team is unable to contact insurance providers for privacy reasons.
Direct billing
We can bill directly to most major extended health benefit plans. This means that rather than paying upfront for the whole amount and being reimbursed by your insurance company, you pay only the amount you are responsible for. Please confirm with your insurance company (or with us at admission) if we can bill your insurance company directly. Bring your insurance information with you to the hospital.
Paying a hospital room bill
Some health-care services are not covered by the Ontario Health Insurance Program (OHIP) or other insurance.

Respiratory virus season and room assignments
During Ontario’s respiratory virus season (November to April), more patients come to the Emergency Department and need to be admitted to the hospital. We have several processes in place to help all patients get care as soon as possible.
We thank you for your understanding and support as we manage respiratory virus season.
Patients with respiratory viruses and other contagious illnesses must be cared for in private rooms to limit the spread of infections. This also protects patients and staff. Mount Sinai Hospital has a limited number of private rooms and cannot accept requests for these rooms at this time, even with insurance coverage or direct payment. These infection prevention measures ensure the safety of all patients and care teams during respiratory virus season.
During your stay, you will be moved to the first available bed on the unit that is best suited to your care needs. You may share a room with a patient of a different gender than your own. This type of room assignment helps patients get inpatient care sooner and helps our team care for all patients more quickly.
Patients who are ready to go home may be moved to the unit’s discharge waiting area (DWA). This process allows our team to clean and prepare rooms for very sick, newly admitted patients. It helps patients waiting in the Emergency Department get a room as soon as possible.
