Scholarships, bursaries and awards
From high school students transitioning to post-secondary education to individuals pursuing further training, Sinai Health offers scholarships, bursaries and awards to honour academic achievement.
Bernard Ghert Award of Resident Excellence in Patient-Focused Care
Presented annually to a resident who has demonstrated excellence in patient care and teaching, particularly in interpersonal relationships with patients and families. The recipient is considered a role model by their colleagues.
Diamond Jubilee Scholarships
The Sinai Health Diamond Jubilee Scholarship was created in recognition of Mount Sinai Hospital's 75th anniversary. This scholarship supports the attainment of higher education for the children of Sinai Health employees. The award consists of two one-time scholarships of $1,000 for students attending a post-secondary institution and is awarded annually.
Donald E. Low Bursary
The Donald E. Low Bursary Fund was established in honour of Dr. Low, who served as the Microbiologist-in-Chief at Mount Sinai Hospital for more than 25 years. It was his wish that this bursary be established to allow an individual who is studying or practising in the field of microbiology to travel to the Microbiology Department at Mount Sinai or another microbiology laboratory. This will expand their knowledge in the field by learning a new laboratory technique, management tool or other relevant skill.
Lloyd S.D. Fogler, KC, Award of Excellence
The Lloyd S.D. Fogler, KC, Award of Excellence was established in 1997 in recognition of Lloyd Fogler’s outstanding tenure as chair of the board from 1992 to 1997. The award recognizes his long-standing commitment to Mount Sinai and its Lunenfeld-Tanenbaum Research Institute. It is awarded to an investigator or group of investigators within Sinai Health whose recent research contributions have had a significant impact at the highest level of international excellence.
Rose Torno Bursary
The purpose of the Rose Torno Bursary, established in honour of Rose Torno, founding president of the Mount Sinai Hospital Auxiliary, is to encourage an interest in research or in health-sciences education.
Valerie Fine Bursary
The purpose of the bursary is to support continuing education toward the promotion of patient-care excellence. It is awarded annually to any Sinai Health employee who has been exceptional in demonstrating Sinai Health's Value of Humanity in the performance of their duties.
Nursing scholarships
Up to two scholarships awarded each year at Mount Sinai and Hennick Bridgepoint.
Debra Hodgins was a clinical nurse specialist in Palliative Care and Oncology who worked at Mount Sinai Hospital for several years. She exemplified the concept of a lifelong learner. Debra completed both a baccalaureate and a master's degree in nursing during her career. She believed in achieving the best and was motivated by her passion for excellent patient care. The Debra Hodgins Nursing Education Scholarship, established in 2006, recognizes the contributions of an outstanding registered nurse who is pursuing formal education at the baccalaureate or graduate level.
Eligibility
All permanent nurses who have completed one year of service at Sinai Health, in a full-time or part-time capacity and in good standing, and who have applied to or are enrolled in an academic program leading to a baccalaureate, master's or doctoral degree in nursing or a related field are eligible for consideration.
Criteria for selection include, but are not limited to:
- Demonstrates qualities in leadership, communication, professional practice and the ability to work well with others
- Commitment to lifelong learning, well-being and self-improvement
- Demonstrated interest, role modelling and examples of meeting the clinical educational needs of peers and patients and their families with respect to oncology, palliative care and end of life
- In recognition of Debra’s contribution to nursing, preference will be given to nurses who have an interest and participation in palliative and oncology nursing

The scholarship will consist of a grant in the amount of $1,500, and the winner will be announced annually during Nursing Week. The funds will be paid upon submission of evidence of successful completion of coursework and tuition receipts totalling $1,500.

The Debra Hodgins Nursing Education Scholarship application must be completed and accompanied by two letters of reference addressing eligibility criteria as described above.
Exclusion criteria: Casual nurses. Recipients of any Sinai Health nursing scholarship or bursary within the previous two years may apply; however, preferential consideration will be given to new applicants.

One scholarship awarded per year to a nurse at either Mount Sinai or Hennick Bridgepoint.
Helen Evans was Mount Sinai Hospital’s first vice-president of nursing and was also a previous president of the Canadian Nurses Association (CNA). Her mission was to enhance the professionalism of nursing practice and to ensure that it was based upon a sound scientific foundation. The Helen Evans Nursing Education Scholarship, established in 1987, recognizes the contributions of an outstanding registered nurse who is pursuing formal continuing education.
Eligibility
All permanent nurses who have completed one year of service at Mount Sinai or Hennick Bridgepoint, in a full-time or part-time capacity and in good standing, and who have applied to or are enrolled in an academic program leading to a baccalaureate, master's or doctoral degree in nursing or a related field are eligible for consideration.
Criteria for selection include, but are not limited to:
- Demonstrated leadership and communication skills, and the ability to work well with others
- Commitment to lifelong learning, well-being and self-improvement
- Demonstrated interest, role modelling and examples of meeting the educational needs of one’s peers (such as new-hire orientation, supporting learners and providing education to peers at a staff forum) and patients and families (such as developing patient-education materials)
- In recognition of Ms. Evans’s work with the CNA, preference will be given to nurses who have obtained CNA specialty certification or formal certification through other professional or educational avenues.

The Helen Evans Nursing Education Scholarship will consist of a grant in the amount of $1,500, and the winner will be announced annually during Nursing Week. The funds will be paid upon submission of evidence of successful completion of coursework and tuition receipts totalling $1,500.

In honour of the late Dr. Laura Teague, a respected nurse practitioner (NP) and academic clinical program lead for wound care, a fund was created to empower nursing professionals. The fund provides financial assistance to support continued education, training and certifications in wound care. The fund will award scholarships on an annual basis to those who demonstrate a passion for wound care, a commitment to clinical excellence and a clear intention to contribute to the advancement of wound care.
Eligibility
Applicants must be nurses or nurse practitioners (RN, RPN, NP) providing direct patient care across Ontario, with an emphasis on remote and northern community practice.
Applicants within Sinai Health must be employees in good standing.
Criteria for selection include, but are not limited to:
- Exhibiting a sincere passion for wound care
- Aspiring to lead advancements in the field
- Demonstrating a commitment to clinical excellence
- Desiring to advance wound-care-related education, research and innovation
Description
The scholarship will consist of up to a total of $5,000 for nurses and NPs across Ontario and an additional $5,000 for nurses and NPs within Sinai Health. Each scholarship will provide funding up to a maximum of $5,000. These funds must be used for the educational, research and innovation purposes outlined in the proposal, such as course fees, certification programs, workshops and related expenses (including travel).

The Laura Mary Teague Scholarship in Wound Care application form (PDF) must be completed and accompanied by a letter of reference addressing eligibility criteria as described above.

The Nursing Clinical Practice Scholarship is open to all nurses in the organization, with priority given to those studying or working in specialty areas such as cardiology, critical care, emergency, dialysis, stroke, acute brain injury, and labour and delivery.
Eligibility
All permanent nurses who have completed one year of service at Mount Sinai or Hennick Bridgepoint in a full-time or part-time capacity and in good standing, and who have applied to or are enrolled in an academic program leading to a baccalaureate, master's or doctoral degree in nursing or a related field are eligible for consideration.
Criteria for selection include, but are not limited to:
- Demonstrates qualities in leadership, communication, and professional practice; the ability to work well with others; and a commitment to lifelong learning
- Demonstrated interest, role modelling and examples of meeting the clinical educational needs of one’s peers, and patients and families
- Participation on unit-based councils or other committees working to improve practice
- Preference will be given to nurses whose interests and activities include nursing research and innovation; implementation of evidence-based practice;; and dedication to improving care in specialty areas such as cardiology, critical care, dialysis, emergency, stroke, acute brain injury, and labour and delivery

The Quality and Safety Nursing Scholarship recognizes the contributions of an outstanding registered nurse who is pursuing formal education towards the enhancement of expert clinical practice.
Eligibility
All permanent nurses who have completed one year of service at Mount Sinai or Hennick Bridgepoint in a full-time or part-time capacity and in good standing, and who have applied to or are enrolled in an academic program leading to a baccalaureate, master's or doctoral degree in nursing or a related field are eligible for consideration.
Criteria for selection include, but are not limited to:
- Demonstrated leadership and communication skills, and an ability to work well with others
- Commitment to lifelong learning, well-being and self-improvement
- Demonstrated interest, role modelling and examples of meeting the clinical educational needs of one’s peers, and patients and families
- In recognition of Mr. Gross’s work with the Patient Care and Quality Assurance Committee, preference will be given to nurses who have interests and activities in initiatives designed to improve clinical nursing practice and patient-care delivery from a quality and safety lens (such as involvement in unit councils or quality-improvement initiatives).

The Quality and Safety Nursing Scholarship will consist of a grant in the amount of $1,500, and the winner will be announced annually during Nursing Week. The funds will be paid upon submission of evidence of successful completion of coursework and tuition receipts totalling $1,500.

The Wolf and Esther Goldstein Fund was a gift given to the Mount Sinai Hospital Department of Nursing from the Wolf Goldstein Estate. The scholarship, established in 2000, recognizes the contributions of outstanding registered nurses who are pursuing formal continuing education at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
Eligibility
All permanent nurses who have completed one year of service at Mount Sinai or Hennick Bridgepoint in a full-time or part-time capacity and in good standing, and who have applied to or are enrolled in an academic program leading to a baccalaureate or a master's degree in nursing or a related field are eligible for consideration.
Criteria for selection include, but are not limited to:
- Demonstrated leadership and communication skills, and an ability to work well with others
- Commitment to lifelong learning, well-being and self-improvement
- Demonstrated interest, role modelling and examples of meeting the clinical educational needs of one’s peers, and patients and families
- As the Goldsteins made specific reference to nursing students at the time of the donation, preference will be given to applicants who have demonstrated superior preceptorship abilities with nursing students and new-hire nurses. Applicants will be asked to provide the names of people they have supported as a preceptor.
Description
This scholarship will consist of a grant of $1,000 and will be awarded annually during Nursing Week. The financial award is meant to support professional nursing practice initiatives and may include, but is not limited to, tuition, attendance at workshops, seminars and conferences, and purchasing textbooks and journals.

Wightman-Berris Academy Awards for teaching
The Wightman-Berris Academy Awards recognize teaching faculty and staff for excellence in teaching, curriculum delivery and innovation in educational methods. These awards bring together teachers of health professional degree programs from all the academy’s affiliated hospitals to celebrate their educational achievements.
There are several categories of awards to recognize different areas of focus and levels of achievement.
The Anderson Awards, in memory of Dr. William Anderson, honour achievements in one of the three following categories:
- Extraordinary contribution to health professional education (up to one winner annually)
- Program innovation and development (up to two winners annually)
- Educational administration (up to two winners annually)
The Individual Teaching Performance Awards recognize teachers whose outstanding skills have been personally identified by their students in one of the three following categories:
- Undergraduate medicine
- Postgraduate medicine
- Health Profession Programs
Sinai Health Excellence in Education Awards
The Sinai Health Excellence in Education Awards recognize the outstanding efforts of supervisors, preceptors, teams and leaders in clinical education who demonstrate excellence in creating a supportive and enriching environment for learners at Sinai Health.

Distinguished Educator Award
The Distinguished Educator Award recognizes individuals who have gone above and beyond the call of duty in their contribution to student clinical education through their commitment, teamwork, interprofessional collaboration and innovation. Complete the Distinguished Educator nomination form to recognize an educator who has gone above and beyond in supporting learner education.
Leadership in Education Award
The Leadership in Education Award recognizes individuals who have provided leadership in clinical education, fostered a culture where clinical education is valued and supported others in their efforts to grow as teachers. Complete the Leadership in Education nomination form to recognize an individual who demonstrates leadership in learner education and supports teaching excellence.
Collaboration in Education Award
The Collaboration in Education Award recognizes a team, either within one profession or across professions, that has made an outstanding contribution to student education through its commitment, interprofessional collaboration and innovation.
