Medicine Programs
An enriching experience
Sinai Health supports the training of medical students, residents and fellows enrolled at the University of Toronto, Faculty of Medicine.
We also provide elective experiences for learners from across Canada and around the world.
Students at both Mount Sinai Hospital and Hennick Bridgepoint Hospital learn important clinical skills. They also learn how to collaborate with other members of the health-care team to provide patient and family-centred care.
Students learn in a variety of settings including acute and chronic care, ambulatory care, rehabilitation and complex continuing care.
Sinai Health is one of the anchor sites of the Wightman-Berris Academy of the University of Toronto. Wightman-Berris is the largest of four faculty of medicine academies. It provides a diverse range of opportunities for clinical learning at the undergraduate level.
Our post-graduate programs offer training in a wide range of core and specialty programs through the University of Toronto. Clinical fellowships are offered in highly specialized areas in which Mount Sinai has clinical expertise.
Our programs
Undergraduate MD program
The undergraduate MD program at Sinai Health, under the Wightman-Berris Academy, offers comprehensive medical education to approximately 93 students annually. Our students have access to multiple clinical sites within the Sinai Health family of hospitals. These include Mount Sinai and Hennick Bridgepoint as well as other renowned institutions like The Hospital for Sick Children and the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health.
In year one and two, students take part in the pre-clerkship curriculum, known as Foundations. This program emphasizes competency-based learning in physiology, clinical principles and humanities.
Students are led by Sinai Health clinicians and professionals. They engage in case-based learning, clinical skills development, health services research and community health understanding. They also participate in reflective activities and receive personalized academic coaching.
Students in year three and four participate in clerkships in which they can:
- Participate in rotations as members of the health-care team in their choice of unit
- Choose elective and selective experiences in a range of subspecialties
- Perform diagnostic and therapeutic procedures and work on call
Opportunities for self-directed learning and career exploration further enrich the educational experience. This immersive and supportive environment equips students with the skills and knowledge necessary to become competent health-care professionals.
Post-MD program
Post-MD program residents are placed at Sinai Health to continue their generalist and specialty training in a wide range of programs. Some of these residents are also involved in research and quality improvement projects.
Residents have a dual role in our system. They are key providers of care in our clinics and wards and learners on the road to independent practice.
Residents at Sinai Health:
- Work with a graded level of responsibility under world-renowned physicians
- Enhance their medical knowledge and clinical skills by practising medicine in a leading-edge research, teaching and clinical care institution
- Gain experience working in a variety of regional, provincial or national programs in diabetes, high-risk obstetrics, inflammatory bowel disease, neonatal intensive care, reconstructive orthopaedics, critical care, bone and soft-tissue sarcoma, and in the bone and tissue bank
Clinical fellowships
Clinical and research fellows come from across Canada and around the world to develop skills beyond residency. Fellows are fully qualified specialists who undergo an additional one to two years of training in particular. Fellows may also primarily be involved in research.
Sinai Health fellowships offer highly specialized medical or research training in our areas of expertise.
Visit the University of Toronto’s Post-Graduate Medical Education website for more information on fellowships.
