Congratulations to Dr. Allan Detsky on his appointment to the Order of Canada. Dr. Detsky is a trailblazer who helped to define and shape our Department of Medicine.

Dr. Detsky graduated from Harvard Medical School and Harvard-Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Division of Health Sciences and Technology with both a PhD in Economics (from MIT) and an MD. As a general internist and researcher, he quickly became recognized as a global leader in health economics and clinical epidemiology. His appointment to the Order of Canada noted his role in applying the techniques of economic analysis to measuring the value of pharmaceutical products in Ontario and Canada.

Dr. Detsky was appointed Physician-in-Chief at Mount Sinai Hospital in 1997 and served in that role for 12 years.  Under his leadership, along with Dr. Michael Baker, he built the joint Department of Medicine at Mount Sinai Hospital and UHN, a strategic alliance that shaped and defined so much of how we deliver care to our inpatients today. In that capacity, he continued to care for patients, and teach and mentor thousands of trainees and faculty at the University of Toronto and beyond.

Dr. Detsky has made an indelible mark on Sinai Health System, and our patients. His influence has extended well beyond our organization, and this appointment to the ranks amongst extraordinary Canadian leaders is a point of great pride for Sinai Health System.
