Dr. Max Ben-Yakov appointed as Sinai Health's next Chief, Emergency Medicine

A respected emergency medicine physician, educator and health system leader, Dr. Ben-Yakov brings extensive experience in clinical informatics, strategic innovation and operational excellence. He currently serves as Medical Director of Informatics at Hennick Humber Hospital and Emergency Department Director of Clinical Informatics at University Health Network. He is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Medicine at the Temerty Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto.

Dr. Ben-Yakov earned his medical degree from McGill University before completing his Emergency Medicine residency and Paediatric Emergency Medicine fellowship at the University of Toronto. He is dual-certified in Emergency Medicine and Paediatric Emergency Medicine through the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. His postgraduate education also includes a Master of Health Informatics from the University of Waterloo and a Certificate in Artificial Intelligence in Health Care from the MIT Sloan School of Management Executive Program.

Widely recognized for his collaborative leadership style and commitment to co-designed quality improvement, Dr. Ben-Yakov has received numerous awards in emergency medicine, digital innovation and teaching, including the Ontario Centre of Innovation Digital Transformation Award. His research focuses on health system transformation through clinical informatics, with a particular emphasis on improving patient and provider experience. He has presented and published nationally and internationally and was named one of Toronto's Top Emergency Physicians in 2025.

As Chief, Emergency Medicine, Dr. Ben-Yakov will provide leadership to one of Canada's busiest academic emergency departments, supporting excellence in patient care, education and research. He brings a collaborative approach focused on fostering staff well-being and engagement while advancing high-quality, sustainable emergency care.
