Overview

Dr. Evangelia Vlachodimitropoulou is a maternal-fetal medicine specialist at Mount Sinai Hospital and an assistant professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the University of Toronto (U of T). She completed her medical degree at King’s College London and her obstetrics and gynaecology residency in London, United Kingdom before earning a PhD in haematology from University College London. Her research focused on iron biology, haemoglobinopathies and transfusional iron overload. She subsequently completed fellowships in maternal and fetal haematology, maternal and fetal medicine and fetal therapy at Mount Sinai and U of T, earning her FRCSC in maternal-fetal medicine in October 2022.

Dr. Vlachodimitropoulou’s clinical practice focuses on complex high-risk pregnancies. Her areas of expertise include maternal haematological disorders, fetal haematology, red blood cell alloimmunisation, fetal and neonatal alloimmune thrombocytopaenia, venous thromboembolism, sickle cell disease, and thalassaemia in pregnancy. She works closely with interprofessional teams across obstetrics, haematology, transfusion medicine, anaesthesia, neonatology, and fetal therapy.

Her research aims to improve evidence-based care for pregnant patients with haematological conditions and their fetuses. She is principal investigator of the CIHR-funded LEAP multicentre randomized trial, which evaluates postpartum thromboprophylaxis with low-molecular-weight heparin versus aspirin. She is also a co-investigator on the CIHR-funded PANDA trial on the prevention of maternal anaemia and adverse pregnancy outcomes. Her work has been presented at national and international scientific meetings and published in journals including The Lancet Haematology, Blood Advances, the British Journal of Haematology and Thrombosis Research.

Dr. Vlachodimitropoulou contributes to national and international collaborations in obstetric haematology, fetal medicine and transfusion medicine, including consensus guideline work and fetal and neonatal alloimmune thrombocytopaenia research networks. As a clinician-investigator, she is actively involved in clinical trials, supervision and teaching, mentoring medical students, residents and fellows with a focus on developing the next generation of clinician-scientists in maternal-fetal medicine. Her clinical and academic work centres on translating research into compassionate, practical patient care.
