Dr. Rachel Spitzer is Interim Chief of Obstetrics and Gynaecology and Medical Program Director for Women’s and Infants’ Health at Sinai Health. She is also a professor and Vice Chair of Global Health in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the University of Toronto.

Education

Dr. Spitzer earned her medical degree at McMaster University and completed her residency in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at U of T. She completed a fellowship in Paediatric and Adolescent Gynaecology at The Hospital for Sick Children and obtained a Master of Public Health at Harvard University.

Research

Dr. Spitzer’s research focuses on care in underserved populations, reproductive care innovations in global settings, complex contraception, and adolescent pregnancy. She works to improve care and programs for marginalized populations locally and internationally.

Dr. Spitzer founded Canada’s first fellowship program in Global Women’s Health and Equity, training academic OB-GYN practitioners who specialize in care for marginalized and underserved populations.

She is the co-author of more than 50 peer-reviewed papers, including adolescent pregnancy care guidelines.

Awards and recognition

Dr. Spitzer has received multiple awards for excellence in teaching and program development, including the Chair’s Award for Excellence in Postgraduate Program Development and Innovation, the Robert Sheppard Award for Health Equity and Social Justice – both from U of T – and the Sinai Health Leadership in Education Award.
