Psychiatry Emergency Service
We support patients in the Mount Sinai Hospital’s Emergency Department who are experiencing mental health concerns.
What we do
Our interprofessional Psychiatry Emergency Service team offers assessment and treatment planning for patients with mental health or addiction problems in the emergency department.
What to expect
During your Emergency Department visit, you may be referred to the Psychiatry Emergency Service team. A clinical nurse specialist, mental health clinician or physician from our team will talk with you and ask questions to understand your current experience and history.
We will then work with you to develop a treatment and safety care plan that is specific to your needs.
Care plans may include:
- Medication options
- Psycho-social interventions or treatments
- Recommendations for educational tools and self-help resources
Please note we are a teaching hospital, so you may see medical students, residents or other medical trainees as part of your care team. Learners are supervised by other members of our dedicated health-care team who work together to provide you with comprehensive care.
What to bring
- Health (OHIP) card or valid health-care coverage
- A list of your current medications
- A support person, if desired
How to access our services
We provide psychiatry consultations upon request from the Mount Sinai Emergency Department. Patients seen by the Psychiatry Emergency Services may be referred for brief outpatient follow-up in our clinic.
