Transitional Aged Youth Medical Psychiatry Clinic
We provide specialized mental health support to patients aged 18 to 30 being treated for a physical illness.
What we do
Our interprofessional Psychiatry team recognizes that people between the ages of 18 and 30 age are at increased risk for the onset of psychiatric disorders.
A new or chronic medical diagnosis can also affect a young person's development, self-esteem and ability to stay on top of medical care.
The Transitional Aged Youth Medical Psychiatry Clinic provides mental health care for young adults aged 18 to 30 who are also dealing with other medical conditions. This includes young people with a chronic disease transitioning into the adult health-care system and those who have been newly diagnosed.
We work alongside our medical and surgical colleagues across specialties including endocrinology, rheumatology, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), oncology and more.
What to expect
At your first appointment, a clinician will ask about your current symptoms, feelings, experiences, treatment history and how these affect your daily life.
We will work with you to create a care plan tailored to your needs. Your care plan may include:
- Medication options
- Psycho-social interventions
- Individual or group therapies
- Recommendations for educational tools and self-help resources
- Guidance on accessing financial or housing support, if this is right for you
Our team will also keep your referring physician informed about your care plan.
Please note we are a teaching hospital, so you may see medical students, residents or other medical trainees as part of your care. Learners are supervised by other members of our dedicated health-care team who work together to provide you with comprehensive care.
AI transcription tools
Transitional Aged Youth Medical Psychiatry Clinic care providers may use ScribeBerry, an AI transcription tool or “AI scribe,” during your visit. ScribeBerry securely captures notes from your conversation so your care provider can focus more on you and less on paperwork.
Your care provider will always ask for your verbal consent before using this tool and will carefully review and edit all notes before they are added to your medical record.
For more information about AI transcription tools, please see our Patient Privacy page.
