What to expect
At your first appointment, a gynaecologist will ask about your medical history and symptoms and perform a physical exam.
The gynaecologist may ask to take a photograph to include in your medical chart in order to accurately monitor your condition and track improvement.
We may also recommend a biopsy where we remove a small sample of tissue to test in a lab. Biopsies can be performed in our clinic during your appointment.
The gynaecologist will then work with you to decide on a care plan that is specific to your needs. Your treatment may commonly include any of the following:
- Topical steroid cream that is applied to the area
- Topical estrogen cream that is applied to the area
- Antihistamine medication to reduce itching
- Referral to a different specialist, if necessary
After your first visit, most patients can follow up with their referring physician to monitor their condition.
Please note we are a teaching hospital, so you may see a medical students, residents, fellows or other medical trainees as part of your care. Learners are supervised by other members of our dedicated care team who work together to provide you with comprehensive care.
