Seeing an Obstetrician
We provide care for patients throughout pregnancy and birth.
What we do
Obstetricians (OBs) are physicians with specialized training in pregnancy care and birth. Our OBs provide care for patients throughout their pregnancy and work as a team to assist with labour and birth.
What to expect
You will have multiple appointments with your OB throughout your pregnancy to monitor the health of both you and your baby.
The exact timing of your appointments may vary, but they generally follow a common prenatal appointment timeline.
Whenever possible, our team will try to schedule ultrasounds or other tests on the same days as your visits. While this reduces the frequency of travel to Mount Sinai Hospital, it can make for a very long day. Please be prepared to spend several hours during your visit.
Your first visit
You may have already had several tests such as blood tests, urine tests and a dating ultrasound before your first appointment with your OB.
Please check in at the main reception desk when you arrive. If this is your first visit to Mount Sinai, we will give you a hospital card and then direct you to the waiting area.
During your first visit, our team will take some extra time to get to know you and review your overall health. A health-care provider will ask about your medical history, check your blood pressure and weight, and listen to your baby's heartbeat if an ultrasound has not been done that day.
You will then meet with your OB to talk about recent test results and go over any questions and or concerns you may have. Your OB will work with you to design a pregnancy care plan that is specific to your needs.
Once your first visit is complete, you will “check out” with our reception staff who will schedule your upcoming tests and appointments.
Other visits
Throughout your pregnancy, your OB may recommend tests such as ultrasounds, blood tests and urine tests at different times. Your OB may also talk to you about prenatal screening options, such as anatomy scans, placental scans or other specialized tests, as needed.
Your labour and birth will take place at Mount Sinai and you will be cared for by the OB on call that day.
Some patients have a final visit with their OB around six-weeks postpartum while others return to the care of their referring or primary care provider.
Please note we are a teaching hospital, so you may see medical students, residents or other medical trainees as part of your care. Learners are supervised by other members of our dedicated care team who work together to provide you with comprehensive care.
