Dr. David Gratzer to join Sinai Health as Psychiatrist-in-Chief
Dr. Gratzer has dedicated his career to improving access to high-quality, evidence-informed care for people with mental illness. He will begin his term on June 1, 2026.
An Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Toronto’s Temerty Faculty of Medicine, Dr. Gratzer brings to the role extensive experience in clinical care, quality improvement and mental health policy. He is currently Co-Chief, General Adult Psychiatry and Health Systems, at the Centre of Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH). He brings a collaborative leadership style and a strong interest in building models of care that support patients, families and care teams alike.
On receiving his medical degree from the University of Manitoba, Dr. Gratzer completed psychiatry training at the University of Toronto (U of T). His postgraduate training includes the Advanced Health Leadership Program and the Veteran Affairs Quality Scholars, both at U of T. Most recently, Dr. Gratzer graduated from Health AI Academy, a national training initiative to train health professionals on the use of artificial intelligence and advanced analytics in health care.
Widely known for his thoughtful mentorship and commitment to continuing professional development, Dr. Gratzer has received numerous teaching and education awards, including the Temerty Faculty of Medicine’s Ivan Silver Innovation Award. His ‘Reading of the Week’ program which aims to bridge the gap between research and clinical work, has led to partnerships with 15 Canadian postgraduate psychiatry programs and several others outside Canada.
Dr. Gratzer’s research and scholarly work focus on health systems improvement and the responsible use of digital technologies in mental health care. Widely published in peer-reviewed journals, Dr. Gratzer has written several book chapters and is a frequent contributor to national and international discussions on mental health policy and innovation. He is an Associate Editor for JMIR Mental Health, and a founding member of the App Advisor Expert Panel for the American Psychiatric Association.
Sinai Health will welcome Dr. Gratzer to this role at a key time of mental health and addictions focus at both Mount Sinai and Hennick Bridgepoint Hospitals.
