Overview

Dr. Jennia Michaeli is a clinician-investigator and Assistant Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the University of Toronto (U of T), and a reproductive endocrinology and infertility specialist at Mount Sinai Fertility. She received her medical degree from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and completed her residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Shaare Zedek Medical Center in Jerusalem, followed by a clinical fellowship in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility at the University of Toronto.

Her clinical practice focuses on oncofertility, providing comprehensive fertility preservation counselling and services for patients facing cancer treatments and other fertility-threatening conditions. She specializes in caring for cancer survivors, addressing their unique reproductive challenges and supporting them in achieving their family-building goals. Dr. Michaeli is deeply committed to preserving reproductive autonomy for all patients, particularly vulnerable populations requiring urgent fertility preservation, including children and adolescents.

Dr. Michaeli is a national leader in oncofertility and fertility preservation. She pioneered Ontario's first centralized ovarian tissue cryobanking program and developed an innovative provincial model for ovarian tissue transportation, creating equitable access to fertility preservation services across Ontario. Her groundbreaking work enables cancer patients located hundreds of kilometres from Toronto to access urgent fertility preservation procedures through coordinated remote care with their local oncologists and gynaecologists, demonstrating how fertility preservation can be integrated into standard oncology care regardless of patient location. Building on this success, she is actively working to scale these services nationally and advocates for improved access to fertility preservation care across Canada.

She founded and serves as medical co-lead of the Pediatric Fertility Preservation Program at The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids), one of the only programs of its kind in pediatric oncology in Canada. In addition to this program, she also collaborates with multiple paediatric oncology centres across Ontario to advance fertility preservation care for children and adolescents facing cancer treatments in the province. Her leadership in oncofertility has been recognized through a prestigious Ontario Institute for Cancer Research (OICR) Innovation to Implementation grant in 2025, supporting an implementation science project focused on expanding fertility preservation services at SickKids.

At the national level, Dr. Michaeli serves as Chair of the Fertility Preservation Special Interest Group of the Canadian Fertility and Andrology Society (CFAS), where she leads initiatives to advance oncofertility practice and policy across Canada. Through this role, she promotes collaboration among fertility specialists, oncologists and health-care providers, working to establish standardized protocols and improve access to fertility preservation services nationwide. Her national advocacy efforts include engaging with policymakers and health-care leaders to integrate fertility preservation into cancer care pathways and ensure equitable access for all Canadian patients.

At the international level, Dr. Michaeli serves as vice-chair of the Clinical Practice Committee in the Pediatric and Adolescent Committee of the Oncofertility Consortium, where she helps shape clinical guidelines and best practices in fertility preservation. In 2024, she and her colleagues, including her mentor Dr. Ellen Greenblatt, received an award for excellence in research from the Oncofertility Consortium in Pittsburgh for their innovations in ovarian tissue cryopreservation.

Dr. Michaeli's research emphasizes novel biomarkers of reproductive fitness and gamete quality, with particular focus on fertility preservation and reproductive aging. Her research has been published in prestigious peer-reviewed journals. She has presented her work at leading international conferences.

Reflected in both her academic and clinical work, Dr. Michaeli remains dedicated to building pathways of support for patients facing urgent fertility concerns and advancing the field of fertility preservation through innovation, research, and compassionate care. She is passionate about improving the integration of fertility preservation conversations into oncology care, ensuring every patient, from young children to adults, has the opportunity to protect their reproductive future.

In addition to providing infertility and urgent oncofertility care, Dr. Michaeli also leads a unique cancer-survivorship fertility clinic where she sees cancer survivors for reproductive planning and family-building.
