Overview

Dr. John Kingdom is a clinician-investigator and high-risk obstetrician in the Maternal-Fetal Medicine Division at Mount Sinai Hospital. His clinical and research work focuses on the full range of complications associated with abnormal placentation, centred on the Placenta Program, which he leads alongside Dr. John Snelgrove as of July 2026.

His research spans the screening, diagnosis, and management of placental insufficiency disorders, including the clinical utility of maternal circulating placenta growth factor (PlGF) and advanced ultrasound and MR imaging. In parallel, he is involved in mouse models of placental dysfunction with Dr. John Sled, principal investigator in Medical Biophysics at the Hospital for Sick Children.

Dr. Kingdom recently published results from a large study of 9,100 patients on PlGF screening aligned with gestational diabetes screening at 24 to 28 weeks, to predict third-trimester placenta-mediated complications. His research also focuses on detecting placental malfunction and fetal genetic abnormalities non-invasively, using placenta-derived trophoblast cells shed into the cervical canal in the first trimester. This work was funded in 2026 by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), with principal investigator Dr. Sascha Drewlo at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre.

From 2013 to 2023, Dr. Kingdom served as Chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the University of Toronto. He supervises research projects by Maternal-Fetal Medicine fellows and is committed to mentoring learners and junior faculty in their career development.
