Dr. Allison McGeer

MD, FRCPC
Clinician Scientist

Our research group, in collaboration with microbiologists, infection control practitioners, infectious disease physicians and public health staff across the greater Toronto area, works on studies to better understand how to prevent, diagnose and treat serious bacterial and viral infections. Our population-based surveillance system that assesses the burden and epidemiology of viral and bacterial diseases has been continuously active since 1992: the bacteria and viruses studied have changed over time, depending on the questions of importance to clinicians and policy makers.

We are interested in using observational studies (now called obtaining “real world evidence”) to understand how and how often bacteria and viruses are transmitted from person to person in the hospital, to study the reasons for emergence of antimicrobial resistance and support its prevention and to understand how to optimally use vaccines for the prevention of serious illness.

Over time, our studies have changed recommendations for managing contacts of patients with serious group A streptococcal infection, for choices of antibiotics in people being hospitalized for pneumonia with bacteremia, meaning bacteria are also present in the blood and for recommendations for pneumococcal and COVID-19 vaccination in different population groups. Our current studies include work on the effectiveness of pneumococcal vaccination in adults, on the emergence of antifungal resistance in serious infections due to Candida and on how to prevent transmission of resistant bacteria from sinks to hospitalized patients.

We are always looking for motivated researchers to join our team.

Postdocs
Our research group is always interested in recruiting highly motivated postdoctoral fellows with a strong publication record in infectious disease epidemiology or bioinformatics. Please forward your CV, references and research interests to Allison McGeer ([email protected]).

Graduate students
Our research group is part of the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology, and of the Dalla Lana School of Public Health, in the Faculty of Medicine at U of T, both of which have a central admission committee. Graduate students interested in doing a PhD in the laboratory must first be accepted into one of these departments.

Summer students
Summer students are exclusively selected from successful applicants to the Research Training Center (RTC) at the Lunenfeld-Tanenbaum Research Institute. Applications are available online and need to be filled by February 28th of each year.
