Advancing care for patients with severe breathing problems and cancer-related illness

Our research program focuses on acute respiratory failure, non-invasive respiratory support and immunocompromised critically ill patients.

Our team is involved in clinical trials and multi-centre collaborations evaluating how different breathing support devices, such as high-flow nasal oxygen and non-invasive ventilation, can be used more safely and effectively.

A second major focus of our program is the management of immunocompromised patients with critical illness, a population for which Sinai Health is a provincial referral centre. Together with colleagues at Mount Sinai Hospital and Princess Margaret Hospital, we study trajectories and outcomes in patients with blood cancers, bone marrow transplantation and complications of novel cancer immunotherapies such as chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T-cell therapy. This collaborative work integrates epidemiology and translational approaches to better characterize mechanisms of critical illness, identify patients at risk, and inform targeted management strategies.

Our overall goal is for our research to have direct implications for bedside management in intensive care units, while also building capacity and accelerating knowledge translation through national and international partnerships. Ultimately, we aim to generate rigorous evidence that improves survival, recovery and quality of life for critically ill patients.
