Our health services research program focuses on two main areas:

  1. The intersection between emergency medicine and cancer care.
  2. Venous thromboembolism (blood clots) and anticoagulation (blood-thinner treatment) in the emergency department.  

Patients with cancer frequently rely on the emergency department at every stage of their care, from diagnosis and treatment to survivorship and end-of-life-care. Despite the critical role of emergency medicine in cancer care, there is still limited research on how emergency care affects outcomes for cancer patients. Our research looks at how and why cancer patients use the emergency department and how these visits relate to their health outcomes. The goal is to identify opportunities to improve care both locally and at a population level.  

We also study blood clots and blood-thinner treatments in the emergency department. This is an important area in emergency medicine and especially relevant to cancer patients given their increased risk of developing blood clots.
