Preventing and detecting high blood pressure in pregnancy

High blood pressure in pregnancy is a serious complication that affects one in 13 pregnancies in Canada, approximately 26,900 each year. These disorders are linked to poor pregnancy outcomes, including preterm birth, stillbirth and fetal growth restriction. They also pose serious risks to the short- and long-term cardiovascular health of pregnant people.

The goal of our clinical research program is to advance maternal cardiovascular health by improving how we prevent, diagnose and manage disorders of pregnancy caused by high blood pressure. We work closely with pregnant patients, health-care providers and experts across Canada to explore three main areas.

First, we are initiating a clinical trial to determine whether offering aspirin to all pregnant people early in pregnancy can prevent preeclampsia, the most dangerous blood pressure disorder of pregnancy. Second, we are testing new devices to monitor heart and blood vessel health during pregnancy to help detect problems earlier. Third, we are working with health-care providers and key stakeholders across Canada to share knowledge about a new blood test that could improve how we diagnose high blood pressure in pregnancy.

Our research program aims to improve maternal and fetal health during pregnancy, and reduce the long-term risk of cardiovascular disease in females.
