Our focus is on improving care for mothers and newborns through research that is both on patient- and disease-centred. Our work spans research in neonatal-perinatal medicine, health services and epidemiological research in maternal-newborn care, knowledge synthesis and mobilization, and quality improvement.

Through leadership of the Canadian Preterm Birth Network (CPTBN), a national collaboration that brings together all 32 neonatal intensive care units (NICUs), 26 maternal-fetal medicine nits and 26 neurodevelopmental follow-up clinics, we have built important bridges between care providers across the continuum, from obstetricians and midwifes to paediatricians, nurses and respiratory therapists. This collaboration supports meaningful data collection and sharing of the best outcomes using the Evidence-based Practice Identification and Quality Improvement (EPIQ) platform. The participation and buy-in from all disciplines allow interactive collaborations by different care providers leading to improved outcomes. Lessons from this model of collaborative care can be implemented in many health disciplines.

We also lead the International Network for Evaluation of Outcomes of Neonates (iNeo). Through this global initiative we oversee the benchmarking of outcomes for very preterm babies across 13 countries and 400 NICUs including middle-income countries. Our goal is to improve care quality worldwide by analyzing large datasets of vulnerable premature babies and translating findings into policy and advocacy through participation in executive committees and advisory boards at local, provincial, national and international levels.
