Improving pain management and recovery during childbirth

We study how to make anesthesia and pain care during pregnancy and childbirth safer, more effective, and more responsive to the needs of patients and families. Our research spans labour analgesia, Cesarean delivery, postpartum recovery, loss of blood during pregnancy, labor or delivery and the care of people with complex medical conditions during pregnancy.

We work across disciplines and institutions to identify important gaps in care, test new treatments and approaches, and develop practical ways to improve outcomes. This includes evaluating new medications and techniques for pain relief and bleeding, developing better measures of recovery and quality, and studying how anesthesia teams can recognize and respond earlier when complications occur. We also examine how care is organized and delivered, with the goal of translating evidence into safer and more consistent clinical practice.

Our work matters because childbirth is one of the most common reasons people receive hospital care, yet important differences in access, experience and outcomes remain. By combining clinical trials, patient-centred outcomes research, quality improvement, and national and international collaboration, we aim to generate evidence that can be applied directly at the bedside. Ultimately, we want every patient to receive safe, equitable, high-quality anesthesia and pain care throughout pregnancy, childbirth and recovery.
