Improving maternal and fetal outcomes through surgical innovation

Our research focuses on complex obstetric surgery and placental health. In particular, we investigate placenta accreta spectrum disorders, which occur when the placenta abnormally attaches too deeply into the uterine wall and can be life-threatening, assisted vaginal birth, where forceps or vacuum may be needed to deliver the baby and pre-eclampsia, a common pregnancy disorder marked by high blood pressure. Through national and international collaborations, we champion evidence-based best practice and maintaining the “Art of Obstetrics”.

Having developed the first international Clinical Fellowship in Complex Obstetric Surgery here at Mount Sinai Hospital and the University of Toronto, we are honoured to have worked alongside past and current trainees of this special program. We led the publication of a number of national clinical guidelines through the Society of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists of Canada and currently lead innovative simulation-based training and virtual reality model development for obstetric procedures. Overall, our work aims to improve maternal and fetal outcomes by advancing surgical techniques, enhancing diagnostic accuracy and translating research into practice.
