Special Care Dentistry Clinic
We provide hospital-based dental care for patients with complex medical conditions and disabilities.
What we do
Dentists in this clinic provide general dental care in a hospital setting for adults with developmental disabilities or complex health-care needs.
We are one of only a few clinics in Ontario that provides comprehensive dental care to the adult special care population. We are committed to working with patients when challenges prevent them from accessing dental care outside a hospital setting.
What to expect
Before your first appointment, we may ask you to complete a patient health questionnaire to help us understand your medical history and needs. Please bring your completed questionnaire with you to your first appointment.
At your first appointment, we will review your questionnaire and work with you to decide on a care plan that is specific to your needs.
We may recommend X-rays and an examination by one of our hospital dentists to help inform your care plan.
Depending on your needs, your care plan may include future visits to our clinic for your dental care. Some patients may be better served at a dental clinic in their community. We will provide you with a referral if that is right for you.
If you become a patient of our dental clinic, most of your procedures and treatments will take place in one of our clinics. We may use the operating room for procedures and treatments that require deep sedation.
Please note we are a teaching hospital, so you may see medical students, residents or other medical trainees as part of your care. Learners are supervised by other members of our dedicated health-care team who work together to provide you with comprehensive care.
Please be aware that most dental treatments are not covered by OHIP and you will be required to pay for your dental care. See our dentistry fees for more information.
