Addiction Medicine Consult Service
We support patients admitted to Mount Sinai Hospital who are also experiencing substance use disorders.
What we do
Our interprofessional team provides assessment and treatment for patients with substance use disorders who are admitted to Mount Sinai Hospital’s medical, surgical and obstetric units, as well as patients in the Emergency Department.
The Addiction Medicine Consult Service also assists physicians in prescribing opioids to medically complex patients and those at risk of experiencing withdrawal or leaving the hospital against medical advice.
What to expect
Our Addiction Medicine team has specialized expertise in managing and treating substance use disorders. We will work with you and your care team to determine the most effective care plan during your hospital stay.
When you are ready to leave the hospital, we will work with you to plan for a safer discharge process and access to community services, if this is right for you. We may refer you to our outpatient addictions clinic, STAMP, to support you in your transition back to the community.
Your treatment plan may include any of the following:
- Opiate agonist treatment (OAT), where your physician prescribes medications that reduce cravings for opioids
- Medical management of withdrawal symptoms and pain
- Medications to reduce the cravings for alcohol or other stimulants
- Harm reduction education, resources and supplies
- Collaboration with the Mount Sinai Psychiatry team for assessment and treatment of concurrent disorders
How to access our services
Your medical, surgical or obstetric care team may request an addiction medicine consultation as part of your treatment plan.
