Family Planning Clinic
We provide contraceptive services to individuals with complex medical needs or other barriers to contraception.
What we do
The Family Planning Clinic team provides specialized birth control services for people with complex medical needs or other barriers to contraception (birth control).
Our patients include people with medical conditions that raise the risk of complications while using birth control. We also see people who have experienced complications in the past.
For more information on family planning, please visit Sex & U, a resource from The Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada (SOGC).
What to expect
At your first appointment, a gynaecologist will ask about your medical history and symptoms. You will have the opportunity to ask questions and talk about any concerns you may have.
The gynaecologist will help you understand your contraception options and work with you to find one that is specific to your needs.
Our birth control services include the following:
- Inserting long-acting reversible contraceptives (LARC) such as intrauterine devices (IUDs) or birth control implants
- Addressing any issues related to IUDs
- Removing IUDs
- Arranging for tubal ligation ("getting your tubes tied")
- If you choose to have an IUD or birth control implant, we may perform the insertion on the same day as your appointment.
Please note we are a teaching hospital, so you may see a medical students, residents, fellows or other medical trainees as part of your care. Learners are supervised by other members of our dedicated care team who work together to provide you with comprehensive care.
We usually recommend at least one in-person or virtual follow-up appointment to monitor for complications.
