Join us for a conversation about "Clinical Ethics Issues Related to HIV: The Historical Context and Today."
In this presentation, Michael Montess, PhD (CAMH) considers the historical context of HIV in order to better understand clinical ethics issues related to HIV today.
Learning objectives:
- Learn about the historical context surrounding HIV, including the history of the AIDS epidemic, AIDS activism, and HIV treatment and prevention.
- Learn about clinical ethics issues related to HIV that are relevant today, including respect for autonomy, HIV criminalization, adherence, confidentiality, and access to medication.
- Learn about other topics in HIV ethics, including HIV criminalization, HIV exceptionalism, HIV in South Africa, and solidarity around HIV today.
Michael Montess is a Bioethicist at CAMH. Michael recently completed a fellowship year at the Centre for Clinical Ethics with Unity Health Toronto and the University of Toronto. Michael has a PhD in Philosophy from York University and his dissertation was on the social and political dimensions of the ethics of HIV prevention. He has also worked as a Policy Analyst with the Public Health Agency of Canada and as a Postdoc at Western University and the University of Victoria. His research has focused on topics related to public health ethics involving pandemics, including both COVID-19 and HIV/AIDS, as well as other topics in 2SLGBTQ+ health.
