Abstract
Adults with developmental disabilities are living longer than ever before, resulting in new challenges related to aging, frailty, chronic disease and health-care decision-making. These complexities often give rise to ethical questions regarding autonomy, capacity, quality of life and goals of care. This presentation examines ethical issues encountered when supporting aging adults with developmental disabilities and highlights practical approaches to person-centred, values-based decision-making. Using an ethics framework and illustrative case examples, participants will explore strategies for balancing competing interests, supporting substitute decision-makers, and promoting equitable, compassionate care across health-care settings.

- Review our recent history “caring” for people with developmental disability
- Identify the legislation that applies to support health-care decisions and at-risk discharges
- Apply ethics principles to a complex care scenario
