Dr. Gary Newton appointed President and Chief Executive Officer of Sinai Health System

TORONTO, Ontario – Mr. Brent Belzberg, Chair of the Board of Directors of Sinai Health System and Chair of the CEO Selection Committee, and Mr. David Denison, O.C., Vice-Chair of the Board of Sinai Health System, announced today that Dr. Gary Newton, currently Chief Medical Strategy Officer and Physician-in-Chief of Sinai Health System, will assume the role of President and CEO, effective October 3, 2016.

Dr. Newton is a graduate of the University of Toronto Medical School and has been on faculty at the University of Toronto since 1996. He completed internal medicine at the University of Toronto and training in adult cardiology at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute. This was followed by specialty training in heart failure, combined with an integrative cardiac physiology fellowship at Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto. Dr. Newton has also had an active research program in human physiology, focusing on congestive heart failure.

A well respected physician leader, Dr. Newton served as the Head of the Division of Cardiology, University Health Network and Mount Sinai Hospital, from 2009 through 2013. He was appointed Physician-in-Chief at Mount Sinai Hospital in November 2013 and assumed his current role as Chief Medical Strategy Officer and Physician-in-Chief of Sinai Health System in January 2015.

Dr. Newton has played an instrumental role in defining the long-term strategy for Sinai Health System, making the move to President and CEO a natural extension of his talents.”

Mr. Denison said, “We’re fortunate to also have Sinai Health System Founding President and CEO, Joseph Mapa, and Associate CEO and Transformation Officer, Marian Walsh, continuing to actively support and oversee the transition of the leadership of Sinai Health System to Dr. Newton to ensure a seamless and successful handover.”
