Congratulations to Dr. Mathew Sermer on his re-appointment as Chief of the Joint Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology of Sinai Health, Women’s College Hospital and University Health Network.

Dr. Sermer is also the Physician Lead for the Women’s and Infants’ Health Program and the Head of the Medical Disorders of Pregnancy Program at Mount Sinai Hospital.

During his tenure to date, Dr. Sermer has successfully advanced the Department in its clinical, quality and academic missions, and engaged with partners in developing and executing a comprehensive strategic plan. He has established a strong team of clinical investigators with a focus on Maternal Medicine, the Ontario Fetal Centre and Women’s Health.

Under his leadership the Department has achieved premier status in Obstetrics and Gynaecology Departments, both nationally and internationally. His continued mentorship of faculty, in partnership with University of Toronto leadership, has ensured career development and leadership opportunities, as evidenced by multiple senior promotions and awards. In his second term, Dr. Sermer has committed to advance Departmental work in equity, diversity and inclusion, with a goal of enhancing access and culturally safe obstetric and gynaecologic care. 

A Professor of Obstetrics & Gynaecology and a Professor of Medicine at the University of Toronto, Dr. Sermer has received awards for excellence in education, as well as the Chair’s Award for Life-long Sustained Excellence in Research. With over 170 peer reviewed publications, Dr. Sermer has held numerous Canadian Institute for Health Research grants, including his latest titled, “The Atrial Fibrillation in Pregnancy: assessing severe maternal morbidity and anticoagulation strategies (AFIB-PREG)”.
