What we do

The Transitional Pain Service at the Wasser Pain Management Centre helps patients who are at risk for developing chronic pain after surgery.

It is normal to feel some pain in the first three months after surgery. Some patients who have a history of chronic pain or other chronic health conditions may have a higher risk of developing pain that lasts longer than expected.

We help patients cope with post-surgery pain, minimize the risk of developing chronic pain and taper off opioids.

What to expect

Our pain specialists treat patients before, during and after their hospital stay.

You will meet a pain specialist in our clinic before your surgery to review your medical history, evaluate your risk of developing chronic pain and find the right treatment plan that is specific to your needs.

After your surgery we will ask you about your pain levels. We will help manage your pain during your recovery in the hospital.

After you leave the hospital, your care may continue in our outpatient pain clinic. We will also work with your primary care provider to help manage your medications and provide pain management recommendations.

Please note that we are a teaching hospital, so you may see medical students, residents or other medical trainees as part of your care. Learners are supervised by other members of our dedicated care team who work together to provide you with comprehensive care.

What to bring

  • Health (OHIP) card or valid health-care coverage
  • A list of your medications
  • A list of questions you want to ask
  • A support person, if desired
