In-Hospital Chemotherapy for Sarcoma
Learn more about being admitted to the hospital for chemotherapy to treat sarcoma.
What we do
Some chemotherapy regimens for bone and soft tissue sarcomas may require you to be admitted to the hospital. Depending on your treatment protocol, you may need to stay in the hospital for two to five days.
You will be admitted to the inpatient chemotherapy unit. The inpatient chemotherapy unit is next to the surgical ward where you may have a biopsy, surgery and postoperative recovery. Members of our interprofessional care team will care for you throughout your treatment.
What to expect
On the day of your scheduled treatment, you will check in at the Cancer Care Clinic where you will be given an armband and blood labels.
After checking in, you proceed to the inpatient chemotherapy unit where you will wait for your blood results.
Once your blood results are available, you will be called for your appointment with a medical oncologist. The oncologist will review your blood results with you and confirm if you are able to receive chemotherapy on that day.
If you are receiving chemotherapy that same day, you will then be directed to the admitting department on the main level to register and receive your inpatient wristband.
You will be assigned a room on the inpatient chemotherapy unit to receive your chemotherapy.
After receiving chemotherapy for two to five days, you will be ready for discharge. Discharge times vary depending on your treatment protocol, but are likely to be in the late evening. Your nurse will tell you your estimated discharge time.
