Clinic-Based Neurological Rehabilitation
We help patients with recent stroke, brain injury or diagnosis of a neurological disorder gain independence and function.
What we do
The Neurological Rehabilitation program provides short-term and intensive rehabilitation in our outpatient clinic.
Our therapists see patients who have experienced any of the following:
- Recent stroke or brain injury
- Recent brain surgery
- Diagnosis of a neurological disorder like multiple sclerosis (MS) or Parkinson's disease.
Our therapy programs are customized to meet your unique needs and goals. The length of the program and frequency of visits varies.
The goal of therapy to help patients reduce symptoms, regain as much independence as possible and improve their overall well-being.
What to expect
At your first visit, you will meet with your rehabilitation therapist who will talk to you about your medical history, assess your physical and cognitive abilities and work with you to develop therapy goals.
Therapy can take many different forms depending on your individual needs. Your therapy team may include physiotherapists, speech-language pathologists, occupational therapists, therapy assistants, social workers and nurses. You may also see a physiatrist (rehabilitation physician) or a neuropsychologist during your program.
During your Neurological Rehabilitation program, you may have individual or group therapy in our gym, pool or other therapeutic areas. Your therapy may include exercises and activities to improve any of the following:
- Mobility, balance, strength and coordination
- Speaking, reading, writing or swallowing
- Thinking and memory
- Use of adaptive equipment such as a walker or shower bench
Your therapist will teach you how to practice exercises on your own time in a safe way. We can also connect you with local community resources and social supports.
Please note we are a teaching hospital, so you may see medical students, residents and learners from various health professions as part of your care. Learners are supervised by other members of our dedicated health-care team who work together to provide you with comprehensive care.
Our therapists offer virtual visits for patients who require them. Details about how to connect with the therapist will be shared with those patients when they make their appointment.
