LTRI researchers receive funding for international work in early childhood development
Congratulations to Dr. Stephen Lye and Dr. Stephen Matthews, researchers at the Lunenfeld-Tanenbaum Research Institute, on being awarded funding this week through the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR)’s The Healthy Life Trajectories (HeLTI) initiative.
While most of the funding that was announced is directed at national projects, Drs. Lye and Matthews are focused internationally, in conjunction with the World Health Organization (WHO). Dr. Matthews will focus on India, to understand how environmental exposures in the preconception period and pregnancy, infancy and childhood impact life-long health and development in children, and Dr. Lye’s focus will be in South Africa to test how to improve women’s health prior to, and during pregnancy in order to reduce health challenges experienced by their children later in life such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, and stunted growth.
Dr. Shoo Lee, Scientific Director, CIHR Institute of Human Development, Child and Youth Health and Sinai Health System’s Paediatrician-in-Chief, was on hand with MP Bill Blair to make the announcement.
