Mount Sinai Hospital achieves Magnet® recognition with Distinction
This third Magnet® re-designation was awarded with Distinction, a recognition reserved for the highest-performing Magnet organizations worldwide.
Mount Sinai Hospital remains the only hospital in Canada to receive this prestigious international recognition for nursing excellence and outstanding patient care from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC).
“At Sinai Health, the principles of the Magnet Recognition Program are reflected through a strong commitment to professional practice, interprofessional collaboration and continuous quality improvement, said Jane Merkley, Executive Vice President, Chief Nursing Officer, and Chief Operating Officer. “Through the Centre for Nursing Excellence and Science of Care Institute, Sinai Health continues to support nurse-led research and innovation that meets the high-marked Magnet bar.”
Earlier this year, appraisers from the ANCC engaged with hundreds of employees, physicians, learners and leaders across the organization to see how Magnet principles are embedded in everyday care. Throughout the visit, appraisers highlighted Mount Sinai’s shared decision-making and professional practice, along with several initiatives that are improving care and patient experience. During the decision call with ANCC, it was noted that Mount Sinai had achieved 15 exemplars across categories such as nurse satisfaction, patient experience, exemplary professional practice and new knowledge, innovations and improvements.
Among them was Mount Sinai’s nurse-led wound care program, which uses donated amniotic membrane grafts to support healing in chronic and complex wounds. Through Mothers Healing Others, donated placental tissue is processed and applied to help treat patients with diabetic foot ulcers, burns and surgical wound complications. The appraisal team recognized the initiative as an example of innovation and evidence-informed practice advancing patient-centred care.
The Fertility Preservation Program was also highlighted for its collaborative approach to supporting oncology patients whose fertility may be impacted by cancer treatment. Nurses from inpatient oncology and the Mount Sinai Fertility Clinic work together to quickly connect patients with fertility specialists and supportive care services during treatment planning.
Appraisers also recognized the implementation of on-demand Interpreter Services in the Emergency Department, helping improve communication and accessibility for patients and families with limited English proficiency through live interpreter support available across various languages.
“This recognition belongs to our people,” said Nely Amaral, Vice President, Quality, Patient Experience, and Awards of Distinction. “Every day, our teams demonstrate exceptional professionalism, compassion and dedication to patients and one another. Achieving Magnet re-designation with Distinction is a reflection of the culture our people have built together and the incredible commitment they bring to advancing safe, high-quality care.”
