Families walking the halls outside the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Mount Sinai Hospital are now greeted by a powerful reminder that even the smallest patients can grow into thriving children.

The NICU Wall of Hope, recently installed on the 17th floor, features framed photos of former NICU babies alongside images of them today. Painted in “preemie purple,” the display was thoughtfully designed to offer encouragement to families navigating what can be an emotional and uncertain journey.

“It’s really inspirational for families,” said John Balcom, Patient Care Manager of the NICU. “When families are feeling defeated, they can walk down the hallway and see these pictures and think, ‘At some point, I’ll be there too.’”

The idea for the wall began in February 2025, when Mount Sinai’s NICU leadership team attended the Annual Neonatal Evidence-Based Practice for Improving Quality (EPIQ) Conference in Montreal. The national gathering brings together Level III NICU teams from across Canada to review performance metrics, share best practices and advance neonatal care.

During site visits, the team toured the Jewish General Hospital NICU, where they encountered a Wall of Hope that left a lasting impression.

“It was really nice and really inspiring,” Balcom said.

Motivated to bring that same sense of encouragement to Mount Sinai families, the NICU leadership team worked collaboratively with Parent Advisory Committee members and veteran support parents to bring the vision to life. Families were invited to participate during the NICU reunion in June, where photos were collected of former patients now growing and thriving.

A meaningful moment along the NICU journey

The inaugural installation features approximately 18 NICU graduates, each representing a story of resilience and progress.

The NICU experience is often described as a roller coaster, with families navigating daily highs and lows as their newborns receive specialized care. The Wall of Hope was intentionally placed along the route to the family lounge, creating a meaningful pause point where caregivers can reflect and find reassurance.

“One day everything’s good, the next day things aren’t,” Balcom said. “So it just goes up and down. It’s good for families to see that hope.”

While still relatively new, the wall is already contributing to a broader culture of family-centred support within the unit. The initiative complements other recent efforts by the NICU team to enhance the family experience, including community-supported meal programs and donor-funded amenities designed to ease the burden on caregivers during long hospital stays.

The Wall of Hope is intended to evolve over time. Plans are underway to add brief stories and key details beneath each photo, such as gestational age and birth weight, and to refresh images as new NICU graduates are celebrated. The team also hopes the display will continue to grow as more families choose to share their journeys.

For John and the NICU, the purpose of the wall is both simple and profound: to ensure every family who walks the hallway feels seen, supported and reminded of what is possible.

“I think everyone needs hope,” he said.
