Breast Cancer
The Marvelle Koffler Breast Centre at Mount Sinai Hospital is a premiere facility specializing in all aspects of breast care.
Breast cancer occurs when abnormal cells in the breast grow out of control. It can begin in different parts of the breast. Most breast cancers begin in the ducts (which carry milk to the nipple) or lobules (the glands that make milk).
While breast cancer most often occurs in women, men can get breast cancer too.
The Marvelle Koffler Breast Centre cares for more than 34,000 patients each year.
What to expect
Breast cancer is easier to treat when it is found early. We provide mammograms to screen for breast cancer as part of the Ontario Breast Screening Program.
If you are diagnosed with breast cancer, our interprofessional team will work with you to develop a care plan that is tailored to your needs. Multiple physicians participate in your care, which ensures you receive the best possible treatment.
Your care plan may include any combination of surgery, chemotherapy, systemic therapy or radiation. Patients receiving systemic therapy, including chemotherapy, come to the Cancer Care Clinic for treatment.
As part of your treatment plan you may also receive psychosocial support, genetic counselling and nutritional counselling.
