Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) Pain Management Program
We use cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) in a group setting to help patients manage pain.
What we do
Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is an effective method for managing pain that teaches patients to recognize patterns in their thoughts and behaviours and to reframe their thoughts in ways that make them feel better.
What to expect
Our group CBT pain management program meets once a week for ten weeks at Hennick Bridgepoint Hospital.
Each session is three hours long and led by a physician from the pain management centre at Mount Sinai Hospital who is trained in CBT for pain management. Sessions include a lesson about CBT, time for practice and 30 minutes of physiotherapist-led gentle physical exercise.
The pain management centre also offers a virtual mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) program. Many patients benefit from participating in both the CBT and MBSR programs.
