Women's Health Procedure Clinic
We provide timely access to several women’s health procedures.
What we do
Our procedure clinic offers timely access to various women’s health procedures, including intrauterine device (IUD) insertion and removal, contraceptive implant (Nexplanon) insertion and removal, and endometrial biopsies.
This clinic is available to patients at our Toronto site as well as patients referred from the community.
Intrauterine device (IUD) insertion and removal
An IUD is a T-shaped device that is inserted into your uterus to prevent pregnancy. There are two types of IUDs: hormonal IUDs and copper IUDs. Your health-care provider can help you determine which one is the best option for you. Once an IUD is inserted, it prevents pregnancy for several years.
Contraceptive implant insertion and removal
A contraceptive implant is a small plastic rod that is inserted under the skin of your upper arm. It releases the hormone progestin, which prevents you from getting pregnant. A contraceptive implant is effective for several years after being implanted.
Endometrial biopsies
During an endometrial biopsy, we remove a small amount of tissue from the lining of your uterus. This sample is studied to find the cause of symptoms like irregular bleeding.
Your family physician can help you decide which birth control method is right for you. If you want to become pregnant, we can remove your IUD or contraceptive implant.
What to expect
Please follow all instructions given to you by your physician in preparation for your appointment.
At your appointment, a physician will review your medical history, explain the procedure you are having and answer any questions you may have. Depending on the procedure, the physician may examine your vagina, cervix and uterus.
The physician will also talk to you about next steps and any follow-up appointments you may have.
What to bring
- Health (OHIP) card or valid health-care coverage
- The prescription provided by your referring physician for your IUD or implant
- A list of your current medications
- A list of questions you want to ask
- A support person, if desired
