Every day our people at Sinai Health are doing extraordinary things. Captured Caring is a series featuring submissions from our people to provide you with inspiration and encouragement as we care for patients and each other.

October 15 was Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Day. This is a day recognized around the world and dedicated to honouring and remembering the lives of babies lost during pregnancy or shortly after birth.

To mark this occasion, Jennifer Fletcher, Nurse Clinician, Labour and Delivery, and I facilitated a perinatal bereavement workshop. Nurses from the Labour and Delivery and Antenatal/Women's and Infants' Health Resource team came together to participate in educational sessions delivered by an interdisciplinary group of professionals who support families experiencing pregnancy or infant loss.

The workshop included contributions from our social work, spiritual care, bioethics, midwifery, medical genetics, pathology, health records, medical and nursing teams. Our goal was to learn from each other and share valuable insights into providing high quality, supportive and compassionate care for our patients and families during a vulnerable time.

On September 30, Orange Shirt Day, also known as the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, Mount Sinai Hospital social workers took time to listen, reflect and discuss the truth about residential schools, the survivors, as well as the children who did not return home. We make a commitment to continued learning.

The Medical Disorders of Pregnancy Course brought together specialists in maternal fetal medicine, obstetrics, primary care, internal medicine, surgery, obstetric anaesthesia and nursing in an interactive format, replicating the team-based approach of supporting pregnant patients with complex medical conditions.

This year's course highlighted the complexities and advances in care for pregnant individuals with liver and gastrointestinal conditions, heart conditions and arrhythmias, autoimmune conditions and neurological conditions. The course was attended by over 120 participants from a variety of diverse disciplines.

From October 6 to 10, we proudly recognized our incredible team of specialized sonographers at the Ontario Fetal Centre for Sonography Week.

These dedicated professionals bring exceptional skill and compassionate care to every patient and every scan. Their expertise in maternal-fetal ultrasound ensures that families receive precise diagnostics during their high-risk pregnancies. Thank you to our sonographers for their unwavering commitment, outstanding knowledge and the comfort they provide to countless families every day.
