Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD)
The Centre for Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) at Mount Sinai Hospital is the largest IBD program in the country. Our specialists are renowned for excellence in the three pillars of patient care, research and education.
IBD refers to a group of conditions that affect the lining of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. These conditions impact the body’s ability to absorb nutrients from food and eliminate waste. Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis are the two main types of IBD.
Canada has one of the highest rates of IBD in the world and that rate continues to rise. Our centre treats more than 7,500 patients a year for IBD and other GI disorders.
Our interdisciplinary team of gastroenterologists and colorectal surgeons are at the forefront of cutting-edge medical management and surgical treatment of IBD and complex GI disease.
The centre also performs acclaimed clinical and translational research to advance our understanding of GI disorders and discover life-changing treatments. Sinai Health is home to the GEM (Genetics, Environmental and Microbial) Project, the largest global research project looking to find the causes of Crohn's disease.
We are fully affiliated with the University of Toronto and committed to educating the next generation of specialists. We help train a wide range of medical learners, and our advanced IBD fellowship attracts the brightest talent from around the world.
